Understanding ADHD in Children
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in children. While all children can be inattentive or hyperactive at times, children with ADHD show these behaviors more frequently and severely than their peers.
Three Types of ADHD
- Predominantly Inattentive: Difficulty focusing, following instructions, and organizing tasks
- Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Excessive movement, talking, and difficulty waiting
- Combined Type: Shows both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms
Signs of Inattention
- Makes careless mistakes in schoolwork
- Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play
- Seems not to listen when spoken to directly
- Fails to finish homework or chores
- Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities
- Avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort
- Frequently loses things necessary for tasks
- Is easily distracted by unrelated thoughts
- Is forgetful in daily activities
Signs of Hyperactivity and Impulsivity
- Fidgets with hands or feet, squirms in seat
- Leaves seat when expected to remain seated
- Runs or climbs in inappropriate situations
- Unable to play quietly
- Talks excessively
- Blurts out answers before questions are completed
- Has difficulty waiting their turn
- Interrupts or intrudes on others
When to Seek Help
If your child shows several of these signs consistently for more than 6 months, and these behaviors are affecting their school performance, friendships, or family life, it's time to seek professional evaluation.
