Understanding Speech Development Milestones
Every child develops at their own pace, but there are certain milestones that most children reach around the same time. When it comes to speech and language development, being aware of potential delays can help you seek early intervention, which often leads to better outcomes.
1. Limited Babbling by 12 Months
By their first birthday, most babies engage in varied babbling with different sounds. If your baby is unusually quiet or uses only a few sounds, this could be an early indicator. Babbling is the foundation for speech development.
2. Few or No Words by 18 Months
Most toddlers say their first words between 12-18 months. By 18 months, children typically have a vocabulary of 10-20 words. If your child isn't using any words or uses very few, it's worth discussing with your pediatrician.
3. Difficulty Following Simple Directions by Age 2
By age two, children should understand simple one-step commands like "Give me the ball" or "Come here." Difficulty with comprehension can indicate a language processing delay.
4. Not Combining Words by Age 2
Two-year-olds typically start putting two words together, like "more milk" or "daddy go." If your child is still using only single words, this is something to monitor.
5. Unclear Speech by Age 3
While three-year-olds won't have perfect pronunciation, familiar adults should understand about 75% of what they say. If your child's speech is very difficult to understand, a speech evaluation might be helpful.
What Should You Do?
